A beautiful new paper in Physical Review X by Luca Giomi — “Stretching theory of Hookean metashells” — develops a continuum theory for elastic shells with internal microstructure (kirigami-style metashells) on curved surfaces.
Despite using ordinary Hookean elasticity, these shells exhibit rich, non-intuitive behaviour due to the geometric frustration between the microstructure and the shell’s Gaussian curvature. Giomi derives a Schrödinger-like equation for lateral pressure, localized deformation states, and elastic Bloch waves.
