Intro — what the public was told
Two particles are born together, vanish almost at once, and yet remain connected. CERN has found a quantum link hidden inside the Higgs. Einstein’s spooky action, now at the electroweak scale. Massive bosons. Qutrits. 4.7 sigma. Nature stranger than the world we walk through.
That is the pop story. It is not false as theatre. It is false as mechanics.
Nothing in the detector is a living pair of Z bosons holding hands across the cavern. What ATLAS recorded is four leptons. Electrons and muons. Angles. A Higgs-mass window. From those angles the collaboration rebuilt a spin-density matrix and asked whether that matrix looks more like the Standard Model’s coherent helicity superposition than like two independent longitudinally polarised bodies.
The answer, under their assumptions, is yes. The story that a secret connection lives inside the Higgs is the scalar overlay.
What actually closed
The Higgs is their scalar seed. It cannot finish as two on-shell Z masses: m_H < 2 m_Z. One line stays off-shell. The object can only close by shedding — four leptons leave. That is the same rule written on this site for concrete and for the cancer face: something must leave the closed object for the system to close.
The “entanglement” they score is residual coherence after the clamp. Off-diagonal entries in a 9×9 helicity book. Not a hidden wire. The twist that did not fully cancel into two finished bodies.
The headline number is not a free measurement of that twist. It is a likelihood test of the SM entangled state against one product state: pure |00⟩, both bosons longitudinal. That is the only CP-even separable foil they allow if the Higgs is 0⁺⁺ and weak decay follows SM chirality. Observed 4.7σ, expected 4.9σ. The paper says the test relies on several Standard Model assumptions in the decays. They are not testing Bell. They are not testing a non-quantum world. They are rejecting one product lock.
Conclusion — the pop sentence rewritten
ATLAS saw four-lepton angles in a Higgs window that prefer the Standard Model’s coherent helicity over a pure longitudinal product. That is a clamp with leftover twist, scored as a density matrix. It is not a secret bond living inside the Higgs. Fixed c hides the duration of the pulse. The off-shell Z* is where their own scalar theory already admits the object was never a finished pair.

Details — the apparatus
Process and data
H → ZZ* → ℓ⁺ℓ⁻ℓ⁺ℓ⁻
ATLAS pp collisions at 13 TeV (Run 2, 140 fb⁻¹) and 13.6 TeV (partial Run 3, 164 fb⁻¹). Four isolated leptons. 115 < m_4ℓ < 130 GeV. Spin analysers: polar and azimuthal angles of the negative leptons in each Z(*) rest frame, z-axis along the boson momentum in the Higgs frame.
Two results, not one
Direct coefficients (spherical-harmonic averages of the spin-density matrix):
C_{2,1,2,−1} = −0.71 ± 0.45 (SM ≈ −0.97)
C_{2,2,2,−2} = 0.08 ± 0.44 (SM ≈ 0.64)
Peres–Horodecki: a non-zero C would mean the two-qutrit spin state is not a product. Errors are large. C_{2,2,2,−2} is compatible with zero. Combined they are “consistent with SM.” Statistics dominate systematics.
Hypothesis test that produced 4.7σ:
q̃ = −2 ln ( ℒ_|00⟩ / ℒ_QE )
Null: separable |00⟩ only. Alternative: SM entangled superposition
|ZZ⟩ = a |+−⟩ + b |00⟩ + c |−+⟩
Full c_{2,2,2,−2} distribution, split on m_Z₂. Pseudo-experiments. CL_s. Observed 4.7σ (expected 4.9σ).
Assumptions they loaded
• Higgs is scalar J^PC = 0⁺⁺. • Lepton angles follow SM chiral weak decay, so spin can be read from daughters. • CP conservation forbids lone transverse product states; |00⟩ is the only allowed separable foil. • Chosen observables have < 2% NLO electroweak bias; other SDM elements can be badly biased by processes without a ZZ* intermediate state. • Interpretation assumes quantum mechanics. Explicitly not a Bell test of alternative theories.
Where the scalar fudge sits
The pair is a cut of the amplitude, not a rigid body. Off-shell Z* is a propagator line kept so a 9×9 matrix can be written. Helicity integers {+1, 0, −1} are the discrete labels. Entanglement is defined as
ρ ≠ Σ_i p_i ρ_A ⊗ ρ_B
That is scalar QM: observer reconstructed from angles, history folded into systematics, coefficients in place of contact geometry. Measurement in the elastic record is clamp of a lamina — tension, judder, changed outcome. ATLAS clamped four tracks and scored a matrix.
Rest Time reading of the same numbers
• Higgs window = seed pulse.
• Off-shell leg = object that cannot close as two finished rest masses.
• Four leptons = the shed required for closure (same logic as measured radioactivity on a set stone).
• Off-diagonal C = residual twist after the Instant.
• |00⟩ foil = State-B longitudinal lock.
• Fixed c hides h. Gravity-as-duration does not enter the fit.
The data can stay. The ontology need not.

Provenance — Project 1 appendix, history of elastic theory
This note sits on the Ace elastic chain, not on a new particle religion. Project 1 of the PhD-by-portfolio is the audit of provenance gaps in cylindrical-shell guidance: the coefficient tables still used for concrete tanks descend from Lewe and are circulated without the theory that made them. That is the same move as the pop Higgs story — keep the numbers, drop the mechanics, sell a coefficient.

Lewe 1906 is the right ancestor for this ATLAS paper. Sudden fixation of a rigid body: velocity change without a finished displacement, scored later as a matrix. ATLAS sudden-fixes a Higgs window and scores helicity. Project 1’s warning still holds: if you keep only the coefficient (C_{2,M1,2,M2}, or 4.7σ) and drop the elastic body that produced the pulse, you will invent a hidden connection where there was a contact patch.
