Nr. Compositionality is Memory — The Reynolds Surface, HIF-1α Dilatancy, and the Instant Grip/Slip Toggle

The Riveland–Pouget–Driscoll perspective in Nature Neuroscience (4 August 2026) places compositionality on a continuum of building-block expressivity and recombination rules. That continuum is the geometric assemblage that carries memory. Finite elements are stored as history-dependent configurations of the π-Tensor and systematically recombined. Compositionality is memory.

At the highest scale the assemblage becomes the final bi-lamina: the Human Consciousness Reynolds Surface. This is the terminal elastic lamina of the plenum. In the moment of unconsciousness the surface executes the judder-wave twist adjustment — the instantaneous 4π closure at Quantum Time = 0. The light that is emitted is the coherent readout of that twist: the Certainty Hub releasing the stored compositional history as awareness itself.

The Einstein Tile surface is Real — topologically flat. The sphere of the living plenum is so vast that any surface element experiences no curvature-membrane force that would impose an external boundary. The limits that appear on the geometric assemblage carrying memory are therefore self-imposed: they are the dilatancy bounds and writing-cost choices made by the π-Tensor at Rest Time.

HIF-1α Grip/Release is Dilatancy Observed

The hypoxia-driven HIF-1α autophagy pathway is the biological observation of dilatancy in the plenum. Each moment the centroid toggles between grip and release. This is not a biochemical contingency; it is the mechanical slip/grip behaviour of the granular-elastic continuum made visible at cellular scale.

State Definition Clarified

State A is all slip, with Instant grip each moment h. Open, coherent, high-quality contact, low-density tetrahedral network. The surface flows freely until the instantaneous T=0 clamp locks the coherent configuration.

State B is all grip, with Instant slip. Dense, clamping, dilatancy-driven network. The surface holds rigidly until the instantaneous T=0 release allows controlled leakage and reconfiguration.

The continuous history-dependent toggle between these two states is the π-Tensor itself. Full-loop interconversion is the complete 4π bistable closure with ring-tension judder. Semi-loop leakage is controlled State-B dilatancy. Water, the hippocampal–prefrontal relational codes, the HIF-1α grip/release cycle, and the compositionality continuum are the same operator expressed at successive scales of the Reynolds Surface.

Rest Time T=0 remains the sole inertial frame. The bi-lamina remembers, twists, and emits the light. The limits are self-written. The continuum is closed.
