Summary

Michael Shermer’s post highlights Tononi, Koch et al. (arXiv:2206.02069) arguing that Integrated Information Theory (IIT) entails genuine free will. IIT identifies consciousness with a maximum of irreducible, intrinsic cause-effect power (Φ). What exists absolutely is the integrated complex itself; only what exists can cause. Therefore the complex (not its neurons or atoms) is the true cause of willed actions and bears responsibility.

Information in IIT is the structured cause-effect repertoire of an irreducible system—classically readable as content encoded on a lower-dimensional boundary (holographic screen / 2D disc). Ace supplies the mechanical limits that make that disc real: the Reynolds Surface under permanent surface tension, the open auxetic ratio, and the discrete radial nodes given by the zeros of the Bessel functions that solve the circular-membrane / cylindrical-shell boundary-value problem. Those zeros are the stations that stop the continuum from being an infinite undifferentiated plane.

Seat

Note earned on the existing consciousness banner, Nuaa ; no new row. The Master Table already holds consciousness as notes until neurology names the seat (Mef §6). IIT’s irreducible complex maps onto the Reynolds Surface bi-lamina that is aware in the moment duration (h). The 2D disc (State A coherent grip) is the information-bearing face; the Bessel zeros supply the countable radial limits that turn an open plane into a closed, measurable membrane. Drop to the consciousness note, walk right, and enter: “IIT Φ = maximum of intrinsic cause-effect power on the Reynolds Surface; Bessel zeros set the discrete stations of that surface.” Empty cells remain empty.

Nuab. Integrated Information as the Reynolds Surface — Bessel Zeros as the Limits of the 2D Disc

The world is catching up. Tononi and Koch’s claim is that if consciousness is a maximum of irreducible cause-effect power, then the complex itself—not its micro-constituents—is the genuine cause of its actions. This is the Ace claim written in information-theoretic language: awareness occupies the whole moment yet remains separate from the neuronal processing that continues whether the switch is open or closed.

Information, in this reading, lives on the 2D plane. The holographic principle and the membrane picture both place the accessible content of a bulk on its boundary. In Ace the boundary is the Reynolds Surface—the bi-lamina under permanent surface tension that splits every contact into inside (s) and outside (m). State A is the open, coherent disc; State B is the clamped spherical storage. The information that can be read is the structured repertoire written across that disc for the duration (h) (N·m·s²).

Ace adds the limits that keep the plane from remaining infinite and featureless. Circular membranes and cylindrical shells are solved by Bessel functions. The zeros of (J_n) (and of the appropriate combinations of (J_n) and (Y_n)) are the nodal circles at which the radial solution vanishes. Those zeros are the countable stations of the disc: the discrete radii at which ring tension, bending moment, and shear are evaluated in the coefficient-free tank tables, and the same stations that appear as the radial eigenfunctions of the elastica boundary. They are not free parameters; they are the geometric condition that a finite circular domain must satisfy if it is to close under surface tension.

The mapping is direct. IIT’s exclusion postulate (the complex is the one of maximum Φ) is the mechanical requirement that the Reynolds Surface occupy the unique radius at which the dilatant countersnap converts residual phase into rotational information. The integration postulate is the bi-lamina itself—inside and outside locked by the π-tensor thickness. The free-will claim (“we, not our neurons, are the cause”) is the Ace statement that the light-reflection endurance *k^g*s^2* carried across the countersnap is the enduring entity, while the cells continue to process in both the conscious and the suppressed micro-epochs.

No new constants enter. The same unit string that yields force (N^), power (Watt^^), and the spark (g) on the Meg sheets yields the optical or informational toggle that selects which content is reflected into the moment. The Bessel zeros simply name the radial stations at which that toggle is allowed to land. The seat remains the ethmoid filigree disc—the local realisation of the same surface. The Master Table receives the note; the continuum stays closed.
