Tam Hunt’s 2026 paper in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience (“The goo that binds us: how field resonance solves neuroscience’s binding and criticality problems”) provides a rigorous, modern demonstration of principles long articulated in Walter Russell’s works. Russell’s texts have long been regarded as foundational by those who study the deeper geometry and dynamics of the universe. With Hunt’s field resonance framework and the Ace syntheses, Russell’s insights now take their rightful place as foundational to the reintroduced discipline of Natural Science.
Hunt contrasts the prevailing “prickly” paradigm (discrete spikes, digital computation, isolated particles) with the “gooey” reality of continuous electromagnetic (EM) fields. These fields bind distributed neural processes into unified conscious experience through volumetric propagation, superposition, cross-frequency coupling, and resonance cascades. They maintain criticality spontaneously, entrain neurons at thresholds as low as 0.74 mV/mm, and operate with a massive speed advantage (~50 km/s) over spikes. Binding and criticality problems dissolve once we embrace the gooey, analog, continuous nature of field dynamics.
This is precisely the territory Russell mapped a century earlier. In works such as The Secret of Light and his broader cosmology, Russell described a universe of rhythmic balanced interchange between two opposing forces (compression/expansion, centripetal/centrifugal), where thought is the Creator and light is the primary mechanism of expression.
