A Formal Theory of Explanation — Now Given Geometric Flesh
Ryan MacDonald’s July 2026 paper The Universal Explainer: Toward a Formal Theory of Explanation is a landmark. Taking David Deutsch’s rich but descriptive idea of the universal explainer, MacDonald supplies the missing computational foundation using the untyped λ-calculus. He models explanatory chains as recursive structures in which states and transformations continuously exchange roles, defines coherence through unique continuation and non-divergence, and arrives at the clean equation:
Explanation = Coherent Structure + Theory
A universal explainer is then any system capable of generating such pairs for every explainable phenomenon.
This is powerful formal work. The Ace Framework supplies what the formalism has been waiting for: the physical geometry in which these structures actually arise and operate.
For the Lay Reader: Explanation as Living Geometry
Think of an explanation not as a list of facts or a clever story, but as a living chain of causes that holds together. When you say “Alice lights a candle, the candle melts, the wax drips,” the sequence feels coherent because each step naturally leads to the next. If instead Alice merely blows on the candle and it melts, the chain feels broken — something is missing in the connection between the actions.
MacDonald shows that true explanations require this hidden connection: each transformation must arise as a continuation of the previous one. The structure must be coherent.
In the Ace view, this coherence is not abstract. It is the geometry of the elastic plenum itself. Every contact between forces creates a Reynolds Surface — a perpendicular patch that expands, splits into inside and outside surfaces, and carries a topological twist. These surfaces do not stay still; under stress they judder in rhythmic, circular waves (the famous ring tension judder). The judder follows natural harmonic steps and creates new coherent continuations.
When you understand something — really understand it — you are aligning with these geometric chains in the plenum. The universal explainer is simply any system — human, future AI, or collective — that has learned to run this toggle reliably.

MacDonald’s formalism maps beautifully onto the Ace geometry. Here are the precise illuminations:
1. Role Exchange → Reynolds Surface Dynamics
MacDonald requires that transformations become states and states become transformations. The Reynolds Surface is this exchange made geometric. The expanding contact patch acts (transformation); the resulting curvature and twist become the new state for the next interaction. Ring tension judder is the dynamic engine of this continuous role reversal.
2. The Coherence Engine → The Love Toggle (0^i2 Operator)
MacDonald’s coherence engine takes an initial (state, transformation) pair and recursively generates the unique coherent continuation. In Ace this engine is the Love toggle. It scans the 3×3×3 contact matrix and selects positive s²/s² alignments. These alignments produce coherent paths; mismatched contacts produce divergence or incoherence. The non-divergence theorem MacDonald proves (once coherent chains converge they cannot later diverge) is the computational expression of the Certainty Principle: the topological twist abides and positive alignment channels energy into stable structure.
3. Recursive Structures and Coherent Collapse → π-Tensor Geometry
Coherent chains in λ-calculus collapse into recursive iterators built from the initial pair. Ace supplies the generator: the π-tensor and the harmonic progression 0-3-6-9-12. Expanding patches and intersecting force grains naturally produce the self-similar, nested structures that the calculus captures abstractly.
4. Explanation = Coherent Structure + Theory → Geometry + Conjectural Encodings
MacDonald shows that coherent structure alone is insufficient; it must be paired with a theory that relates the structure to physical observations via encodings and decodings. In Ace the coherent structure is the Reynolds Surface / elastic plenum geometry. The “theory” is the set of conjectural encodings that map physical data (tectonic strain release, circularly polarised light, neuronal fields, solar-system nodes, etc.) into this geometry, plus the decodings that turn coherent continuations back into predictions or actions. When multiple routes through the same coherent structure agree on the encoded physical outcome, the theory is robust. When they disagree, it is refuted.
5. Universal Explainer → Thought Operating the Toggle on the Plenum
MacDonald defines the universal explainer as any system that can generate explanations for every explainable phenomenon. In Ace this is thought — the coherence engine — running on the π-tensor bistable neuronal engine inside the elastic plenum. The unbounded diversity of explanations arises because there is no bound on the coherent geometric structures that can be discovered or reapplied by analogy. Innovation is the construction of genuinely new coherent structures; learning by analogy is their reapplication under new encodings.
6. The Comprehensible Universe
MacDonald’s conjecture that every physical phenomenon admits an explanation at some level of description is given concrete mechanism by Ace: the elastic plenum is structured (via Reynolds Surfaces, π-tensor bistability, and ring tension judder) so that coherent geometric encodings are always possible. The universe is comprehensible because it is geometric coherence in motion.
Implications — Reintroduced Natural Science
MacDonald gives us the computational skeleton. Ace gives it flesh and blood in the elastic plenum. Together they point toward the need for the reintroduction of the discipline of Natural Science:
- Explanation is not an add-on to physics; it is the natural output of coherent geometry under the Love toggle.
- The universal explainer is not a mysterious extra faculty; it is any system that has learned to operate the toggle reliably on the Reynolds Surface.
- “Quantum” events in seafloor spreading, Floquet-Weyl states under circularly polarised light, two-state water structures, solar-system topological nodes — all are instances of the same ring tension judder and coherence engine at different scales.
Thought is Creator. Creator is Thought.
When thought applies the Love toggle, it drives coherent judder through the plenum and brings new explanatory structure into being. MacDonald has formalised the computational rules. Ace has shown where and how those rules are physically realised.
This is not two separate theories. It is one geometry, seen from the computational side by MacDonald and from the physical side by the Ace syntheses. The conversation between them has only just begun.
